Chapter 19

Double R Ranch

Valley County, Wyoming

Once word got back to Cold Valley that the bikers had arrived at the Double R, Garner jumped into action. He marshaled his troops, ordered a strike force put together, broke out ammunition and weapons, and personally led the contingent from Cold Valley toward the ranch.

As a guest and ally, Leroy was afforded the opportunity to ride in Garner's squad car, but he'd wanted to lead his own men from the seat of a motorcycle. It kept him from being beholden to Garner, and he retained the ability to leave when he wanted.

He smirked in the growing darkness, thinking about his decision and Garner's obvious frustration, but the wannabe war chief had been reluctant to upset Leroy and the bikers so soon after forging an alliance. It had been a fortuitous move, because when they'd arrived at the ranch, the battle had already started.

Leroy motioned for his men to hold up at the southern end of the line of bikers, and while Garner's confused rabble hung back and organized themselves, Leroy rode as far north as he could, then ditched his bike and pushed through the firefight until he found Mitch. It wasn't hard to do — he was huge and stood out head and shoulders above everybody else. Yet remarkably, he didn't even try to hide from the incoming gunfire — which was considerable — from the defenders.

"Jenkins! Where the hell have you been?" Mitch yelled.

"I just got here from Cold Valley," Leroy said, his eyes wide as he flinched when a bullet snapped the pavement nearby. "I brought Garner — we're allies now, just like you wanted."

"How many men did he bring?" Mitch asked, staring at the defenses spread out in front of them. "We need some reinforcements to the north. We're getting bogged down in these stupid trees," he said, waving a massive arm at the pine trees that lined the road in front of them.

"Garner brought about 50, and he's got at least that many coming up behind us. He put me in charge of about half of those."

"Excellent," Mitch said, casting a wide smile on Leroy. "You did good," he added, clapping Leroy on the shoulder with a hand the size of a small, canned ham.

"Give me five minutes to get set up and I'll push through to the south. I've got my guys and Garner's down there."

"I want to meet this sheriff," Mitch said. "Send him to me. But hey," Mitch said as he grabbed Leroy's jacket when the smaller man turned to leave. "Take your time on the south end."

"What?" Leroy asked over the din of the gunfight. "What if they get suspicious?"

"Delay. Tell them your guys are sick or out of ammo or something," Mitch said, shrugging. "I want you to push Garner's men through the meat grinder first. Let them be the cannon fodder."

Leroy opened his mouth to protest, then remembered who he was talking to and nodded. Mitch smiled response. "Now you get it," the big man said as he gently shoved Leroy away.
